Jonathan Meretsky

Mr. Meretsky serves as managing partner of Meretsky & Co.   He brings extensive top tier legal experience to his role.  Mr. Meretsky is well known for his discipline, creativity and depth of knowledge in diverse industries.

Mr. Meretsky recently served as Senior Strategic Advisor at McMillan LLP (formerly Lang Michener LLP), one of Canada's political powerhouse firms, providing counsel to natural resource companies in transactional negotiations and global financial services companies.   Previously, Mr. Meretsky served as Senior Counsel at Holland & Knight LLP, one of the world's largest law firms, where his clients included: Lazard, HSBC, ING, GE Capital, GECAS, USAID, Republic of Guatemala, Republic of Armenia, Finansbanken, Davis Petroleum, LukOil, Draper Fisher Jervetson funds, Reliant Energy, Comerica Bank, Silicon Valley Bank, Union Bank, and Samsung, amongst others.  His practice focuses on structured finance, mergers & acquisitions, venture capital, publicly issued bonds, innovative products, and complex transactions in regulated industries.  Prior to that Mr. Meretsky was a senior associate at the preeminent Wall Street law firm of (now) Dewey & LeBoeuf where he represented international banks, insurance companies, sovereign nations and petroleum industry companies.  Mr. Meretsky also has extensive experience in representing media, technology and entertainment companies for financing and international matters.

Mr. Meretsky is a graduate of Harvard Law School program in international tax (LL.M.), and also has a masters of law in banking and securities law from Boston University School of Law.  He taught 'Commercial Lending' at UCLA Law School as Lecturer at Law.  He is the author of the Project Finance chapter in Hal Scott's textbook: International Finance.  He was named one of California's Movers & Shakers by the law journal in 2002.  In 2004, he was asked to serve the Senator John Kerry for President of the United States campaign as deputy national co-chair of finance and served on his campaign foreign relations advisory team.  Mr. Meretsky holds certificates in law from Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan in Japanese legal studies, Trinity College at Cambridge University in European Union law, and Hong Kong University/Duke University in Asian transactional law.  He is a student of Chinese, Japanese and Russian languages.

Mr. Meretsky is a graduate of Colgate University with concentration in international relations.  He graduated from Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Michigan, and previously attended the Halifax Grammar School.  Notably, early on he had internships with Edward Greenspan, Q.C. and under Janet Reno (former U.S. Attorney General) that helped to shape his dedication to practice.  Mr. Meretsky frequently speaks at industry conferences and has published numerous articles on various aspects of financing and corporate finance.  In addition, he is an active philanthropic and community leader serving on various committees focusing on education, fine arts, financial literacy, diversity in legal services, and protection of human rights.

Mr. Meretsky has significant international transactional and structuring experience working with top level management at some of the world's finest companies and organizations.  Some marquee transactions include: representing Coopers & Lybrand in its acquisition of Price Waterhouse, the IPO of Invesco, spin-out of XL Capital, negotiation of CAFTA with the U.S. for Guatemala, numerous high yield bond issuances for Las Vegas hotel and casino operators, Daewoo Philippines project finance, various energy transactions in CIS for Lazard, numerous financings for General Electric Capital Aviation Services, approximately a billion dollars of middle market financings for Union Bank of California/ Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi, counsel on notable syndicated transactions for various Asian and European based banks, and counsel as to various equity financings for leading technology companies for Draper Fisher Jurvetson.
